We all watched Gossip Girl until the end just to witness the journey and fate of Chuck and Blair. Let me tell you why we were so invested in them.

Chuck and Blair at the train station in France

Most Gossip Girl fans that watched the series until the end watched it solely to see how the story of Blair and Chuck ends. The constant hurdles that prevented Blair and Chuck from being together kept the audiences hooked. Blair and Chuck both were not your typical hero and heroine of a love story. They both lied, schemed, and betrayed numerous time throughout the show, yet they kept the audiences rooting for them. They made us empathize with them. How? Let’s talk about it.

  1. Authenticity

Chuck and Blair were both flawed individuals, but they were unapologetically proud for being who they were. They both presented themselves as exactly who they were; there were no pretences. The audiences admired this boldness in both the characters. Even in the 21st century, most female lead roles are being about being selfless, kind, and moral. The female audiences admired Blair’s willingness to do anything and everything to get what she wants and being unapologetic about her ambitiousness. Her ability to be unbothered by others’ opinions of her was admirable. Chuck was in no way an ideal guy for Blair, but he never also never pretended to be the right guy for her. She felt no obligation to pay attention to matters she didn’t care about. She put herself first. These qualities in her were admired because girls in general have a hard time being unlikeable. This has something to do with how we are raised. Blair’s ability to excel in life without being likeable was a rare sight in television and in real life. She found the best of friends in her life without any false pretenses. She refused to feel guilty for not being there for Chuck when he was on a self destruction spree; she said she needs to focus on herself as well. She thought of it as not abandoning Chuck, but saving herself. These are the reasons why we rooted for them individually; now, let’s talk about why we rooted for them as a couple.

Serana: and you are acting like a total bitch because you are not hormonal

Blair: maybe I am a total bitch. Did you ever think about that?

The main reason why the audience rooted for Chuck and Blair’s alliance was Chuck’s perseverance. Once he realized his feelings for Blair, he never stopped. Admittedly, he crossed many moral lines to get Blair, but the audiences never judged him as his perseverance earned him a lot of sympathies from the audience. He changed himself to be deserving of Blair. Chuck knowing exactly who he wanted and doing anything possible to achieve his love made the audience root for them.

Most importantly, it was evident that their love for each other was very real. They were both selfish by default, but not when it came to each other. Time and again, they have made sacrifices for each other without letting the other person even find out. How can we not root for them!
